04 December 2009

"JCB Compact Products Ltd produce a range of Tracked Excavator and Skid Steer Loader Off Highway plant machinery ranging from 600Kg to 8.85 Tonne.

The entire range produced at this site are complex hydraulically operated pieces of plant machinery and their design is predominantly compact, with mechanical and hydraulic component packaging space at an absolute premium.

Inspection of the internal and hidden components on these machines through the assembly and test processes is often difficult due to the compact nature of the machines themselves.

Following a very successful trial of the Snake Cam system in the summer of 2008 JCB Compact Products purchased two of the Snake Cam systems.

These systems have been implemented into the extremely stringent and detailed test and inspection processes on site, they are used for internal checks on every machine built at the Compact Products facility to ensure the quality of all machines despatched from this site is second to none.

The Snake Cam systems have proven to be an absolutely invaluable and cost effective piece of test and inspection equipment used to inspect inside the machines in the physically and visually inaccessible areas of the complex machinery we produce.

Red Box Search and Inspection Systems have been working with JCB Compact Products to develop a UV camera that can be used to assist with vital maintenance checks. This allows a quicker and more effective method of reviewing and diagnosing any leakages found within the equipment before being shipped out."

Company:JCB Utility Products

JCB Utility Products operates in the manufacture of construction and ground care equipment market. The SnakeCam was purchased in January 2009 and has been used for various applications. The most common use for the kit “is for inspection of concealed areas within our machines, for example the inside of telescopic booms that contain hydraulic hoses and fittings and also underneath of the operator’s cab where visual inspection cannot be carried out.”

The SnakeCam has helped improve efficiency “because we can now inspect our machines without the need to remove some body panels to gain access. The ease of use allows any person not familiar with the “snake eye” to be an expert in minutes.”

The main positives of the SnakeCam kit “are its compact size camera for those hard to reach areas and the large clear screen. Being in an industrial environment with oils and chemicals present the tough exterior and oil/chemical resistance make this an ideal robust piece of kit for us. With the added benefit of the camera it gives us a snapshot of what happens inside our systems. I would recommend this product to anyone who needs restricted access inspection.”

An area of improvement for the product “would be an ultra violet camera.
We use a u/v dye in our systems for leak detection; by the introduction of a u/v camera this would certainly help us to inspect those hard to reach joints.”

A UV camera was developed based on the feedback received from JCB.
